Buying guide

How to choose a power IC

  • Identify which supply is missing. Main PMU faults usually show as no boot or abnormal current draw; camera PMU and Chestnut display PMU faults affect only the camera or display.

  • Match the marking and U-number. e.g. 338S00120 is the main PMU for iPhone 6S/6S Plus (U2000); TPS65657B0 is the Chestnut display PMU for iPhone 13 Pro/13 Pro Max.

  • MacBook power stages. Buck regulators, MOSFETs and load switches are listed with package type (QFN, BGA) – check it against the board.

Before you replace

Check for shorts on the output rails with a DC power supply and a thermal camera, and replace shorted capacitors first. Use a preheater to reduce stress on the board when removing large PMICs.

FAQ

What does a PMIC do in a phone?

The power management IC converts battery power into the various voltage rails the processor, memory and peripherals need, and controls power-up sequencing.

What is a Chestnut IC?

Chestnut is the name used for the iPhone display power IC (e.g. 65730A0P, TPS65656A2). A faulty Chestnut typically causes no display or no backlight while the phone still works.

Do power ICs need reballing?

Yes, BGA power ICs need new solder balls if they are not supplied reballed. Use the stencil for the matching IC package.
