A 38mm Series 1 sits in a drawer for a year. When someone finally picks it up, the screen is standing proud of the case on one side, and there's a gap you can slide a fingernail into. That shape is the classic sign of a lithium battery that has swollen with age and pushed the display out from behind.
This OLED display screen assembly fits the Apple Watch Series 1 in the 38mm size. It's OEM Pull: an Apple-made screen salvaged from a working watch.
Why the 38mm Series 1 screen gives out
Battery swelling lifts the panel, often cracking it or straining the display cable.
A knock cracks the glass outright.
The display stays black while the watch still vibrates and pairs.
Touch stops responding across part or all of the screen.
If the battery has swollen, it has to be replaced too. A new display won't sit flat over a bulging cell, and the pressure will simply push it out again.
Working on a watch this old
Old adhesive on a Series 1 can be brittle, so warm it gently and take your time with a thin blade. The display cables are short; lift the screen only a little before disconnecting. Fit new adhesive when closing. The Series 1 was only rated as splash resistant, so after a repair keep it away from water.
A fresh screen and battery cost little and turn a drawer watch into a working step counter again.
