PlayStation 4

Details

Say your launch-era PS4 has started spitting out discs or showing 'unrecognised disc' errors. On the CUH-10XX, the KES-490A laser is a common culprit, because lasers lose strength with age and use.

This listing sells the KES-490A laser lens for PS4 CUH-10XX consoles. According to the listing, it solves disc reading failures, recognition errors and slow loading.

Signs the laser is failing

Discs aren't recognised.
Games load slowly or freeze while reading.
Some discs read and others don't.
The laser was damaged in a drop.

Installation tips

Rule out a dirty lens first: a careful clean with isopropyl alcohol sometimes brings a tired drive back. Also check the label on the laser, because the later CUH-11XX consoles use a different model. Unplug the console, open the shell and remove the drive. Open the drive casing and swap the laser carefully, keeping your fingers off the lens. Make sure the ribbon cable is fully inserted.

After reassembly, test a few different discs. If they read and load smoothly, the drive is fixed.
