Details

The 10.2-inch iPad has a layered front: a touch glass on top and a separate LCD panel underneath. That design is why a drop can leave the glass intact and the picture ruined, or the other way around. If your iPad still responds to touch but shows ink blots, colored lines or a black area, the LCD is the layer that failed, and this is the part that brings the picture back.

This LCD screen is offered in three qualities: Aftermarket, Refurbished and OEM New. The touch glass is not included, and the listing packs a small repair tool kit with it.

Signs the LCD is the problem

  • Spreading dark or rainbow blotches: the liquid crystal layer is cracked under the glass.

  • Vertical or horizontal lines that stay put: often a damaged panel or its connector.

  • Touch works but the screen stays dark: the backlight or panel has failed, provided the iPad still makes sounds and charges.

Before ordering, read the model number on the back of your iPad and compare it with the list in the specs. The glass on these models is held by adhesive, so a heat source, opening picks and a steady hand are needed; the LCD sits under it and comes out once its screws and connector are freed.

For a family iPad or a school tablet with a cracked picture but a working body, replacing the LCD is a sensible repair that keeps it in use for years.

Questions

What's the difference between the three qualities?

Aftermarket is a non-Apple LCD, OEM New is listed as an original new LCD, and Refurbished sits between them in price. The listing doesn't define Refurbished further.

Is the touch glass included?

No. The touch digitizer is a separate part on these iPads.

Does it fit the iPad 9?

The title lists the iPad 9, but its model numbers aren't in the listing's compatibility list. Check the model number printed on the back of your iPad against that list before ordering.
