An inner screen is the most expensive part in a Galaxy Z Flip 5, so it's worth being sure before ordering. A cracked cover window, a lifted protective layer or a software glitch can all look like a dead screen at first glance, and some of them cost a fraction of this repair.

Checks before you buy

• A line, dead strip or black area along the fold points to the panel.

• Cracks under the protective layer mean the panel is damaged; bubbles on top of it may only be the layer.

• A screen that is black while the Flex Window still works also points to the inner panel.

• Touch that fails near the hinge after a drop is another sign.

The internals move from the old frame into the new one. Keep the new screen's protective layer in place, and test display and touch at several fold angles before final assembly.
